We’ve all heard the importance of exercise and the connection to a healthy lifespan, seems like every where you look these days there is an advertisement for a personal trainer or membership to a gym. Discounts and incentives for long term commitments can greatly reduce your monthly premiums as well as increase the level of resources you can have access to. Yet even with more bang-for-the-buck memberships, most people don’t take advantage of what there able to utilize whenever they go to the gym!
Today we’re all working harder than ever, companies are implementing new policies which eliminate positions and add more and more tasks to less employees, the new motto in corporate America is a lean-work force. Some would say too much work and not enough people to help get things done. These new demands put pressure on employees to constantly be on their toes, however there’s nothing wrong with expecting a good day’s work out of a person, the issue is when too much work is expected on a daily basis, this leads to a burn-out situation.
Needless to say when a hard day’s work is done one of the last things the average person thinks about is going to the gym…Yet one important element in life is the balance between work, family and keeping yourself healthy. Daily exercise should be part of our routine, but for most there seems to be little if not anytime left at the end of the day to keep a proper routine. Some would say just “do-it” and get it over stop “thinking about it,” which can work for some people, not for others.
There is one method of exercise which doesn’t require a membership, require additional time driving or cost any money…Sound too good to be true? Some experts would consider this one of the best exercises to be included in your regular daily routine! Can you guess what it could be? It’s walking, daily walking on a regular basis (30 minutes a day 5 days a week) can actually help reduce stress, aid in controlling your weight, strengthen bones, tone muscles, keep that waist in check as well as reduce the risk of some types of diseases. Not to mention how by just walking you could potentially add years onto your life!
Best part about walking is it can be done anywhere. After a long day at work, before you sit down for the night, or through out the day, you can boost the health benefits by simply going for a walk. Do you own a dog? if so next time you take old Rover out for a stroll, spend a little more time walking, if you walk 10 minutes a day each week, extend it to 20 the next week, before long you’ll be walking 30 minutes a day in no time. If you have an office job, and do not have access to outside, you might want to consider walking at lunch time. Or before you get to the office in the morning or afternoon. Do you use the elevator? if so consider using the stairs instead! Remember always consult with your doctor before you exercise to make sure you are healthy enough for any physical activity.
Today with the invention of the smart phone it’s much easier to check how much time we are spending on any task. So take the time to read the manufacturers specifications regarding the timer on your phone. Keep track of your daily activity, and record your results. Consider walking with someone, this will help you to stay on a routine as well as keep you company when you are out for a walk.
This week look at your current schedule, think about when you could add a few minutes through out the day to get out and take a nice walk! The benefits you’ll receive will out weigh the effort to get out there !
Begin with the first steps…You can always add more in the future.
