In today’s world developing a successful business can be a challenge, quick changes in the economy new products and services on the market each day. At times it can be overwhelming keeping up, yet there are many new businesses growing and expanding. If your business is a brick and mortar model you understand the value of establishing trust with your customers. However if your model is outside the town or state finding new people to do business with is often difficult.
Here in Maine the pace is slower people deal with weather extremes in winter which can impact any business. The life style is not for everyone but living here offers other amenities not found in other states. For that reason people who decide to leave the city and move seek this way of life, some open a business and hang a shingle out for hire, however if your not from the area it will take a while before folks will trust you and do business with you. Income is a bit lower here so people are careful where and how they spend their money.
Although away from most cities you’d think people would be open for new products and services, truth is trust and authenticity is first and foremost which is true in any place your looking to do business. One of the best ways to develop that level of trust is to listen and understand what is needed. Often times we’re looking to sell before we know how to help. When meeting for the first time ask questions about them, people love to talk about themselves. Let them speak watch their language and when you reply match and mirror them.
Match and mirror develops trust, if the conversation is fast you reply fast if slow with breaks between thought you do the same. If they stand a certain way match their stance. If a person is a slow thinker information you are sharing must be communicated in a way they can understand, if you speak fast they will not get it and will loose interest in your product or service, always ask them if they understand and always ask if they have any questions never assume they get it, most times they won’t. Let them finishing talking before you respond, as stated before listen.
It has been said people will do business with people they like and trust, also they don’t like to be sold but like to buy. Every day we sell through the day, could be an idea to a boss of convincing your kids to do their chores nevertheless we look for a way to sell our ideal. The challenge becomes when the other party is not on the same page, but if rapport is developed the situation becomes easier. Trust is established which makes for an easier path to your intention.
No matter where your are in the world changes in cultural and economical conditions can put limitation on any business. First understanding the need and serve the need is a much more efficient way to grow a business in a ever changing world. Even if growing a business in not on your horizon, utilize this technique in every day life, leverage your time instead of spending it getting frustrated with the lack of success.
With all the changes in the world today, it is difficult to keep up and be successful. On thing we can all agree on is good old fashion trust is never going away. No matter where your travels lead you in the world listen, match, mirror, build rapport leave a positive impression, bottom line you’ll come out ahead in the end!
