Do you ever want to earn more money? Is finding spare time to develop a second business a challenge? Does your family or friends ever tell you ” your wasting your time.” Do you want to spend more time with your family?
If you answered yes to at least one of the questions your not alone, truth is most people would like to earn more and have more time to spend with family and friends.
Some years ago I was friends with a man named John, he was a very successful manager at a car dealership, it seemed like every time I spoke to him he was earning more and more money, buying expensive cars, remodeling his house…He was inspiring to talk to. One day I just had to ask the question..So…John how can an average person become as successful as you are? He said it’s simple Steve you just have to put your mind on what you want and go after it…Don’t worry about what people think or say, it’s your life and all that matters is what you think or say…
That was the first time I had ever asked that question, however it did sound simple, I have read many books on the importance of being clear on what you want. Needless to say there was something about the was he said it that made me wonder.
I thanked him for taking the time to talk to me and we agreed to connect in a few months at the same location…
When we finally connected a few months later…much to my surprise my friend John looked tired and worn down…he had gained some weight and was now taking medication for his blood pressure. He and his wife had decided to separate…I was amazed at what I was seeing as well as what John was telling me. I asked him what happened to him? he was so successful and happy. Or so I thought.
He began to tell his story which much to my surprise was a bit backwards…The number one thing he focused on was earning money, his family was number two, with health being at the bottom of the list. John insisted that earning more money would provide a better life for his family. Which in his mind was the only to be successful. It didn’t matter what was important to other people around him.
If you and I are going to live a balanced life we must first sit down and look at that which we value. Of course we need to be focused on what it is we desire in life, however it is equally important to know what we value.
Do you value your family?
Do you value your health?
What value do you attach to money?
This week take time to sit down with a pen and paper and write out your values, remember it’s not “all about you.”
The greatest value in life is what we can provide for other people.
